Welcome to Network for Future Geographers!
We live in a time of rapid change. It is an exciting and challenging time, and there is increasing pressure on Countries to develop fast. Nations have tried with all available resources to develop their communities. Decisions we make now about development will dramatically affect our future. Problems such as global warming, destruction of our reefs and forests, loss of important plants and animals, pollution, increasing poverty, unemployment, devaluation, nutritional problems, changing political boundaries, accelerated human alteration of the environment, and rapidly shifting patterns of human interaction are some of the well known results of inappropriate development.
To solve these problems, students and future leaders need to have knowledge that will help them contribute to sound development decision-making and good management practices. This is the goal of the NETWORK FOR FUTURE GEOGRAPHERS (NFG).
Many around the world do not understand the tangible benefits of studying geography. Many know that those who study geography have no career options in the field because most people do not know anyone who has the job title of “geographer.” The question of why one should study geography is a valid question. Nonetheless, geography is a diverse discipline that can lead to a myriad of career options in areas ranging from business location systems to emergency management.
NETWORK FOR FUTURE GEOGRAPHERS (NFG) is a network founded in July 2010 by a young geography student from the Department of Geography and Regional Planning, University of Cape Coast and pioneered by the activities of Volunteered Project Ambassadors and supported by some Lecturers of geography.
It is our greatest challenge to overcome people’s view of geography as a simple exercise in place-name recognition and to let people know that much of geography’s power lies in the insights it shed for national development on the nature and meaning of the evolving spatial arrangements and landscapes that make up our world. The importance of those insights should not be underestimated at a time of changing political boundaries, accelerated human alteration of the environment, and rapidly shifting patterns of human interaction.
To help create the Next Generation of Geographers whose innovations will help to address the major unmet needs of our global community.
Creating better futures through understanding of the place of geography in global development so as to increase the number of geography majors and the public’s view about the discipline geography and its importance.
